A college friend and I recently met for dinner and to catch up on what had been happening in our lives. Back when we were students those topics changed every couple of months as we cycled through semesters, exams and summer jobs. Now, we often find ourselves talking about the same things! Work projects from eighteen months ago are still in progress and family dynamics are the same, everyone is just a little bit older. And so, as we reach the end of the year, it is good to look back and communicate several events that have happened in NEO STC during 2016.
One of the highlights of the year came during the STC Summit in Anaheim, California, when NEO STC was recognized as a Silver Community for exceptional service to its members and for meeting Society goals. The citation on the award reads: “For your work in building community outside of the work environment through your extensive array of informal events, as well as your impressive student outreach through members sharing their technical communication expertise at area universities.” I have been a member of NEO STC for many years and am very proud of the cooperation and teamwork so many members bring to the chapter! Be sure to visit our webpage for more information about the wide range of awards and recognition the chapter has received over the years.
I think one of the strengths of our chapter rests on our comprehensive bylaws and the strong leadership structure headed by a president, vice president, and immediate past president. This ensures that incoming leaders have plenty of support and can transition without drastic interruption to the life of the chapter. This was tested in August when the incoming president for the 2016-2017 year needed to step down before her term began. In accordance with the bylaws, the board explored several options. I was asked to stay in my role as President for another year with strong assistance from the incoming Vice President, Jason Vensel. With only a few minor hiccups, I’m glad to say the chapter rolled on full of energy and the excellence we have come to expect from NEO STC!
