Are You Eligible for the Distinguished Chapter Service Award?

Are you active in your STC chapter? Have you held office or worked on a committee? Have you judged publications competitions, locally or internationally? Do you speak at chapter meetings? Or maybe you write articles for the chapter newsletter or for Intercom? You can be twice rewarded for your labors: first, by all of your good work, and second, by earning the Distinguished Chapter Service Award!

All chapter members are eligible for nomination for the DCS award, except for the Chapter President and Chapter Vice President. Members who have already received the DCSA from the chapter cannot be nominated again. Members who are fortunate enough to sit on the STC Board of Directors are also ineligible. I’m guessing they’ve already received the DCSA—am I right?

Chapters also occasionally wish to recognize former chapter members who relocate and therefore relinquish their chapter membership. Such former chapter members are eligible, provided they are still active STC members.

The DCSA award is not intended for student members. Students are recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for Students (DSAS).

Because the scope of chapter service is broad, the award criteria are not rigid. Chapters are encouraged to consider at least two basic criteria: consistency of service over time and variety of service. For example, an individual who has long served the chapter by holding various chapter offices, by acting as the webmaster, by running the competition, or any combination, could be nominated.

A member may be nominated for the Distinguished Chapter Service Award in the same year that he or she is nominated for Associate Fellow. The DCSA is a building block toward the honor of Associate Fellow.

The NEO STC Honors Committee researches likely nominees, then sends their nominations to the DCSA Committee. The DCSA Committee prepares a summary of names, citations, and recommendation materials, which are submitted for approval to the STC Board of Directors. The Board votes on these nominations during their January meeting.

DCSA recipients are recognized as a group at the Annual Summit during the Leadership Day activities, and individually on large posters displayed prominently at the venue. All award recipients are also listed in an issue of Intercom and the “STC Notebook” blog.

Because the Distinguished Chapter Service Award is a “lifetime achievement award” for chapter service, chapter leaders are encouraged to develop other awards to recognize members who have provided leadership, and contribute to the chapter at a high level.

Annually, the NEO STC presents these awards: Volunteer of the Year, Rookie Volunteer of the Year, Committee of the Year, Volunteer Recognition Achievement Award, and the President’s Achievement Award. Need I tell you that the DCSA, or any of these awards, looks nifty on a resume?

NEO STC can nominate two members for the DCSA.  The deadline is November 4, 2019.
