Greetings from the Academic Relations team! We often have opportunities during the year for our NEO STC members to volunteer by speaking about their experiences in the profession to students. (Last month’s president’s column talked about our visit to John Carroll.) It is a way to educate northeast Ohio students about what they can do with their degrees after they graduate, inform them about opportunities/directions in the field, and get them interested in technical communication as a career. If you are interested in this type of outreach, please send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, location, and e-mail address. If there is a fit for a future opportunity, we will reach out to you to gauge your availability!
One of our other committee tasks is watching for internships and entry-level job opportunities in communications. (Because most of the college and university programs we work with are based in the English department, I look for various types of communications jobs, not just technical writing.) About once a month I send a list of openings to our academic contacts. Recently I heard from a student who applied for and was offered one of these internships, and she is grateful to NEO STC for letting her know about the opportunity. If your company or other companies you know offer internships or entry-level jobs, please forward them to email@example.com and we will pass them along. Thank you for your support!
